Colorguard
What is colorguard?
The colorguard enhances the performance of the marching band by adding visual impact through the use of equipment (flags), props, dance, and theater. The band plays the soundtrack for the show but the guard tells the story. Colorguard is a physically and mentally demanding performance outlet and has been aptly named “The Sport of the Arts”.
How do I know if I am right for the colorguard?
If you are a hard worker and you like to perform in front of thousands of people then colorguard is for you! No previous experience is required.
Is colorguard difficult?
Yes! Think about it this way, you have a weighted 6 foot pole that you have to manipulate through a predetermined series of angles, curves, and tosses while dancing, running, jumping, and most importantly, smiling. You have to do all this outside (rain or shine, windy or calm) on a football field that you share with the band who happens to be holding and playing thousands of dollars worth of equipment and you really can’t hit anybody or anything. As if that isn’t enough, you have to be so skilled and prepared that all this looks easy and you do not draw attention to yourself and detract from the magnificence of the show. (Now you know why we consider it a sport!) Yes, colorguard is a challenge but hundreds upon thousands of people just like you accept the challenge every year and help produce some of the most spectacular shows imaginable. Yes, colorguard is difficult, but by the time the season is over, I promise, you will make it look easy!
What is required of colorguard members?
Besides registering for colorguard class and a band class, you will be required to attend all marching band rehearsals, performances, and contests. Rehearsals will meet either before or after school. Performances include Thursday, Friday, or Saturday night football games. Colorguard training includes Band Mini-Camp (June 2 – 3), Band Colorguard Camp (June 15 – 19) and summer band beginning August 4th.
It is a tradition of the RAM BAND to have a colorguard unit. You will be a full fledged member of the band. With that said, you will have all of the privileges and responsibilities that every band member has. Welcome to our RAM BAND family!!!
